Melayu Boleh and SEO

I once won an SEO challenge organised by Mohd. Suhaimy, founder of the Wangcyber forum. I actually reached quite high on Yahoo and Google search engines results for the phrase "melayu boleh". The blog post went up to #2 on Google.

However SEO is not a one-off thing and soon my post went down the rankings after I neglected it and it's nowhere to be found today.

This is another effort to topple the adult site from the search engine rankings for this phrase.

Melayu Boleh is a phrase in Bahasa Malaysia (national language of Malaysia). It can loosely translated into English as 'Malays can'. It's a twist on the national slogan "Malaysia boleh". Though in itself, the phrase is quite innocent, it has been hijacked by pornographers. It has become a popular key word for searching for Malay porn on search engines.

There have been some effort to reclaim the phrase from the pornographers but it's a loosing battle and after some success, the pornographers are winning again.

Who's a Melayu?

According to Article 160 of the Constitution of Malaysia, a Malay is defined as "a Malaysian citizen born to a Malaysian citizen who professes to be a Muslim, habitually speaks the Malay language, adheres to Malay customs, and is domiciled in Malaysia or Singapore."

However, when we refer to the Malay race, the narrow definition above does not apply. The term was first introduced by by the German scientist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach and included native inhabitants of the Marianas, the Philippines, the Malukus, Sundas, Indochina, as well as Pacific Islands such as Tahitians.

Referring to language, it is the language of Malaysia and Brunei.

Other than Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, there are ethnic Malay communities in South Africa and Sri Lanka.
